Salt, Selenium, and Smoke on Water

My barrel horse WM Smoke on Water has been a 1D winning barrel horse since he was 5. He’s won barrel horse futurities, high school rodeos, and won and placed at pro rodeos. He did everything for my career.

But life for my horse hasn’t always been easy. Smoke on Water has suffered with severe tying up issues. It was a major problem for both of us, and the situation was worrisome, frustrating, and stressful.

I worried about him tying up every time we rode. The fear of ruining my horse just while exercising, let alone running him, scared me.

We tried everything to help—from muscle biopsies to muscle relaxers (which were risky to his health)—only to find out he was severely and chronically deficient in selenium.

His deficiency required a selenium IV every few months, plus selenium in his feed. It was very difficult to judge when he needed an IV, though, and normally I just had to wait for him to tie up—which was scary and dangerous.

Redmond salt with selenium was the answer for Smoke on Water. It changed his life and his career! I feed him a scoop in his grain daily, plus he has Redmond salt available free choice. He loves it!

After one year on Redmond salt—and without heading to the vet for an IV—I realized we’d found a permanent solution to my horse’s selenium deficiency.

Now that Smoke on Water is getting older, I only run him selectively. But the fact that I don’t worry about him being deficient or having scary bouts of tying up anymore means a whole lot.
