I compete in the Virginia Junior High Rodeo Association and Virginia Cowboys Association. I have four horses on my rodeo team, and each has unique strengths and struggles when it comes to traveling and competing.
I recently had a scare with my mare Nikki. She developed a sudden very upset stomach. She wouldn’t eat her hay, had a temperature that kept rising through the day, was lethargic, and had bad diarrhea. Nikki wasn’t her sassy self, and she had me worried.
Both of my mares, Josie and Willow, came out of pretty bad situations. When we first brought them home, neither wanted to be touched or caught. Humans had failed them in so many ways.
I absolutely love thoroughbreds, and my 3-year-old OTTB gelding Ultra Lucky is a beautiful example of the breed both physically and mentally. I love the feeling and freedom of being one with such a powerful animal.
My husband’s 19-year-old roping horse Trigger is quite a special horse. He’ll do anything and everything for our family. We have a 3-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son, and Trigger loves them both. My son can lead Trigger around at any speed, in any direction, and he’ll follow like a puppy dog. My husband can rope steers on Trigger, then pick up both kids and ride triple together.
When you feed expensive supplements to your horses, you want to believe they work. My horse Scooter is a worrier; he stresses over every little thing. When we attend barrel races, he constantly paces and bellers at the trailer—and he has major separation anxiety whenever I get out of his sight. He’s spoiled, I know!
